1) 관계사란?
우리말에서 형용사는 마치 고무줄이 늘어나늣 수식하는 명사 앞에 두기만 하면 된다.
ex) 산
  → 높은 산
  → 제일 높은 산
  → 세계에서 제일 높은 산
  → 내가 본 것 중 세계에서 제일 높은 산
그러나 영어에서 형용사는 명사를 앞에서 수식하기도 하고, 뒤에서 수식하기도 한다.
ex1) 나를 좋아하는 그 소녀

1) 관계대명사의 기본 원칙
① 반드시 선행사가 있어야 하고 그 선행사(명사)를 수식하는 형용사절을 이끈다.
② 격변화(주격, 소유격, 목적격)을 한다.
③ 접속사의 역할을 한다.
④ 관계대명사절의 동사는 선행사와 수가 일치해야 한다.
⑤ 관계대명사절의 동사는 주절의 동사와 시제가 일치해야 한다.
⑥ 제한적 용법과 계속적 용법이 있다.
⑦ 목적격 관계대명사는 생략할 수 있다.
ex1) I don't know the man./ He is talking to my wife.
   → I don't know the man who is talking to my wife.
ex2) The man is my uncle./ He is coming over here.
   → The man who is coming over here is my uncle.
ex3) I have a friend./ His father is an English teacher.
   → I have a friend whose father is an English teacher.
ex4) The guests will come soon./ I invited them
   → The guests (whom) I invited will come soon.
ex5) The watch is not mine./ It is on the desk.
   → The watch which is on the desk is not mine.
ex6) Sydney is a city./ Its beauty is known to everybody.
   → Sydney is a city whose beauty is known to everybody.
ex7) Sydney is a city./ The beauty of it is known to everybody.
   → Sydney is a city the beauty of which is known to everybody.
ex8) I bought a sports car./ Everyone wanted to drive it.
   → I bought a sports car (which) everyone wanted to drive.
ex9) Look at the boy and the dog./ They are running over there.
   → Look at the boy and the dog that are running over there.
ex10) This is the only girlfriend./ I want to marry her
     → This is the girlfriend (that) I want to marry.
2) 관계대명사 that의 특별용법 - 반드시 관계대명사 that을 써야하는 경우
① 선행사가 「사람 + 사물」이거나 「사람 + 동물」인 경우
② 선행사가 최상급이거나 서수인 경우
③ 의문사(who, what, which)가 있는 의문문에서 의문사의 중복을 피하기 위해
  ex1) Who is the woman that is coming over here?
  ex2) Which is your watch that you lost yesterday?
3) 관계대명사 that을 쓸 수 없는 경우
① 전치사의 목적격으로 쓸 수 없다.
ex) This is the house. I live in the house.
  → This is the house in which I live. (O)
  → This is the house in that I live. (X) ☜ that 앞에 전치사가 올 수 없다.
  → This is the house that[which] I live in. (O)
② 계속적 용법에서는 that을 쓰지 않는다.
ex) He gave me this English grammar book, which was very useful. (O)
      He gave me this English grammar book, that was very useful. (X)
③ 관계대명사 what이나 유사관계대명사 또는 복합관계대명사 대신 that을 쓸 수 없다.
ex) This is what he said to me. (O)
      This is that he said to me. (X)
4) 관계대명사의 용법
① 한정용법: 관계대명사 앞에 콤마가 없다.
ex) I have a son who has become a dentist. (치과의사가 된 아들이 하나 있다.) ☜ 다른 아들이 또 있을 수 있음
② 계속적용법: 관계대명사 앞에 콤마가 있다.
ex) I have a son, who has become a dentist. (아들이 하나 있는데 그 아들이 치과의사가 되었다.) ☜ 아들 오직 하나
5) 관계대명사와 전치사의 위치
① 관계대명사가 이끄는 절(형용사절)의 동사가 「자동사 + 전치사」인 경우
- 「전치사 + 관계대명사」의 문장
-  전치사가 원래 자리에 있는 문장
-  목적격 관계대명사가 생략된 문장
ex) This is the man. I spoke of him yesterday.
  → This is the man of whom I spoke yesterday. (가장 문어체적인 표현)
  → This is the man whom I spoke of yesterday.
  → This is the man I spoke of yesterday. (구어체에서 많이 사용)
② 'all(most, some, both, one) + of + 관계대명사'의 형태로 사용되면 전치사 of는 반드시 관계대명사 앞에 와야 한다.
ex) She had two sons, both of whom were killed at the Korean war.
