Dear Mr. Higgins:
Three years ago we chose to buy lawn sprinkler valves from you for our new headquarters because we knew of you as a neighborhood business that lives up to the reputation of its company slogan: “Quality is our main priority.”
As you may recall, your sales representative Andrew Peters spoke to me at length about our needs. I told him that we were more interested in durability than in saving a few dollars. Andrew said that you carried both brass and plastic valves, brass for $75 each and plastic for $50 each, both from reliable manufacturers. We knew that the brass are usually good for 6 years. Andrew assured us that the plastic
would hold up as well, if not better.
On Andrew’s recommendation our company purchased 48 plastic automatic sprinkler valves from you. Over the past 3 months the sleeve connecting the top of the valve to the main water pipe has burst or cracked on 12 of the valves. Last Sunday one-third of the lawn was flooded for a full day, since 2 valves broke while our small maintenance crew was out handling a problem in another building across town.
The result is that besides repairing considerable damage to the lawn (estimates run about $1,000), we will need to replace the 12 valves.
We are aware that our warranty expired a year ago. However, since the plastic valves were purchased on your recommendation, we think you should be willing to stand behind your work and provide the labor to install brass valves. We are willing to pay for the new valves themselves.

저희는 3년 전에 본사 신사옥에서 쓸 회전 살수기 밸브를 귀사로부터 구입하기로 결정했었는데, 귀사가 저희와 이웃한 업체로서“품질을 최우선으로 한다.”는 슬로건에 걸맞는 평판을 얻기 위해 노력한다고 알고 있었기 때문이었습니다.
아마도 기억을 하시겠지만 귀사 영업 사원인 앤드루 피터스 씨는 우리 회사가 필요로 하는 것에 관해 장황하게 설명을 했었습니다. 저는 그에게 우리 회사는 몇 달러를 아끼는 것보다는 제품 내구성에 관심이 있다고 밝혔습니다. 앤드루 씨는 청동 밸브와 플라스틱 밸브가 있는데 청동 제품의 단가는 75달러이고, 플라스틱 제품은 50달러라며 두 가지 다 믿을 만한 제조업체에서 생산한 것이라고 하였습니다. 우리는 청동 제품의 유효 기간이 대개 6년인 것으로 알고 있었습니다. 앤드루 씨는 플라스틱 제품도 그보다 더 낫지는 않더라도 마찬가지로 오래 사용할 수 있다고 보장했습니다.
앤드루 씨의 권유에 따라 저희 회사는 48개의 플라스틱 자동 살수기 밸브를 구입했습니다. 지난 3개월 동안 12개의 제품에서 밸브 상단을 수도관 본관에 연결하는 슬리브가 터지거나 깨졌습니다. 지난 일요일에는 잔디의 1/3이 온종일 물에 잠겨 버렸는데, 저희 유지 보수부 직원 몇 명이 도시 건너편에 있는 다른 건물에 생긴 문제를 해결하려고 외근을 나간 동안 2개의 밸브가 망가져 버렸기 때문입니다.
결론적으로 상당한 잔디 손상(대략 1,000달러로 추정)에 대한 복구 작업 외에도 12개의 밸브를 교체해야 할 형편이 되었습니다.
저희 보증 기간이 1년 전에 끝난 것은 알고 있습니다. 하지만 귀사의 권유에 따라 플라스틱 밸브를 구입하였으므로, 귀사는 이 일에 책임을 지고 청동 밸브 설치에 필요한 인원을 기꺼이 제공해 주셔야 한다고 생각합니다. 새로운 밸브 구입 비용은 물론 지불을 하겠습니다.
