Getting a driver’s license (I)

International Driver’s License (국제운전 면허증): Valid for a year (1년간 유효)

면허취득 순서

Drivers under 18 years old: need parent’s permission (18세 이하의 지원자는 부모의 동의가 필요)

1) Turn in an application form at a local DMV office (지역 DMV 사무소에 신청서를 제출)

2) Pass the written test (필기시험 합격)

3) Get a permit (실기시험을 위한 운전연수를 할 수 있는 permit 취득)

4) Pass the road test (주행시험 합격)

Task

1) What will the applicant get after passing the written test?

2) You are at the DMV office. You want to get the driver’s license as your international license has been expired. You can drive, so you want to apply for the road test as soon as possible.

DMV officer: Department of Motor Vehicles. May I help you?

Applicant: Yes. I’d like some information about getting a driver’s license, please.

DMV Officer: Certainly. Are you over 18 years old?

Applicant: Yes, I am.

DMV Officer: Then you will need a birth certificate, a passport or some other proof of birth date. Bring that to the DMV and fill out an application for a learner’s permit. Take the written test, pay the fees, and you will be issued your permit. When you are ready, you can come in and take the road test.

Applicant: Ah, actually, I already know how to drive. So I’d like to sign up for the road test as soon as possible.

Example I'd like some information about registering a new car. (신차 등록에 관한 정보를 원합니다.)

I'd like some information about getting a new plate. (새 번호판을 받는 것에 대한 정보를 받고싶습니다.)

2) 명령문 + and: ~ 하라 그러면 ~ 할 것이다.

Take the written test, and you will be issued your permit. (필기시험을 보시요, 그러면 허가를 받게 될 것입니다.)

c.f. 명령문 + or: ~하라 그렇지 않으면 ~ 할 것이다.

Get permission from your parents, or you can't apply for a driver’s license. (부모님의 동의를 받아오세요, 그렇지 않으면 면허증을 신청 할 수 없다.)

3) how to ~ ; ~ 하는 방법

Example I know how to cook Korean food. (나는 한국음식을 요리하는 방법을 알고있다.)

c.f. I don't know how to ~ ; ~ 하는 방법을 모른다.

I don't know how to drive. (운전 하는 방법을 모른다.)

4) sign up for: 신청을 하다.

I'd like to sign up for English class. (영어수업을 신청하고 싶다.)

I’d like some information about getting a driver’s license.

I already know how to drive.

So, I’d like to sign up for the road test as soon as possible.
